How to Use This Motherboard Comparison

This motherboard comparison lists every current desktop board we track and lets you filter and sort them like a spreadsheet instead of scrolling a static buying guide. Prices refresh daily from real retailer stock, so what you see is the price today, not a launch MSRP. Start by picking your CPU platform under Socket: AM5 for Ryzen 7000/9000, LGA1851 for Intel Core Ultra, LGA1700 for older Core. Then narrow by chipset, form factor, and the features you actually need.

Unlike a CPU or GPU, a motherboard has no single performance score: two boards on the same chipset run your CPU identically. What separates them is power delivery, memory support, connectivity, and size. Every column here is sortable, so you can rank boards by our Gaming and Productivity scores, VRM strength, or M.2 slot count and jump straight to the one that fits your build and budget. How We Score Motherboards

A motherboard has dozens of specs (chipset, VRM, memory support, PCIe, M.2, USB, networking) and it isn’t obvious which of them matter for what you’re building. To make that quicker to judge, we distil every board’s specifications into two 0–100 scores, a Gaming score and a Productivity score, so you can see at a glance which boards are well suited to which task. Sort by either score to turn this page into a live motherboard tier list.

The Gaming score weighs the things that genuinely affect a gaming build: whether the board is wired to feed your CPU at full boost, the memory speed it supports, the generation and lanes of the primary PCIe slot your graphics card sits in, the Wi-Fi version (real matter for online play), and M.2 storage. The Productivity score reweights toward what content creators and heavy multitaskers need: fast and plentiful M.2 storage, more USB I/O (including USB4/Thunderbolt), PCIe expansion for extra cards, and memory capacity and slots.

Crucially, our scoring is fit-for-purpose: each factor stops adding points once it’s genuinely great for the job. That’s why an affordable B650 or B860 with strong power delivery, DDR5-6400 support and Wi-Fi 7 scores near the top for gaming, because it really is as good for gaming as a board costing three times as much. The scores separate the boards that are missing something (weak VRM, no Wi-Fi, budget storage) from the ones that have everything you need, and every board’s page breaks its scores down into the individual factors so the number is never a black box.

Best Gaming Motherboard: What Actually Matters

For a gaming build, the best motherboard is the cheapest board that has a socket and chipset matching your CPU, a VRM strong enough to run it at full boost, and the connectivity you need, not the most expensive one. Games don’t run faster on a pricier board. Spend the savings on the graphics card and CPU, which is where frame rates come from.

A mid-range B-series board (B650/B850 on AMD, B860 on Intel) is the value sweet spot for most gamers: enough VRM for any mainstream chip, PCIe 5.0, and Wi-Fi, without the premium of a Z890 or X870 flagship. Step up only if you need heavy overclocking headroom, extra M.2 slots, or 10 GbE. Best Budget Motherboards

With the table sorted by price, the top of the list is your live best-budget motherboard finder. Set your socket, then read up from the cheapest board that still has the VRM, RAM speed, and M.2 slots you need. On AM5 the entry point is A620 and budget B650; on Intel it’s H810 and budget B860, all fine for a mainstream gaming CPU.

Budget boards mainly cost you overclocking, extra M.2 and USB, and VRM headroom for the very top chips, none of which most gaming builds need. Pair a value board with a strong CPU and GPU and put the difference where it raises frame rates.

Every Motherboard Spec, Explained

A motherboard doesn’t make your PC faster: your CPU and graphics card do that. What the board decides is what fits, what connects, and what you can upgrade to: which processor and memory it takes, how many drives and USB devices you can attach, and how much power it can feed a hungry CPU. Here’s what each spec in the table above actually does, how much it matters for a gaming build, and a quick steer, so you can tell the features worth paying for from the ones you can safely ignore.

Socket & chipset

The socket (AM5, LGA1851, LGA1700) is the physical CPU connector, and it must match your processor exactly, so it’s the first thing to filter by. The chipset(A620, B650, B850, X870 on AMD; H810, B860, Z890 on Intel) sets how much the board can do: budget chipsets lock out CPU overclocking and trim PCIe lanes and USB, mid-range B-series boards add memory overclocking and PCIe 5.0, and flagship X/Z chipsets pile on lanes, USB4 and the strongest power delivery. Importance: high. These two decide compatibility and your whole upgrade path. Advice: pick the socket for your CPU, then the cheapest chipset that has the features you actually need. CPU power (VRM)

The VRM (voltage regulator module) feeds clean power to the CPU. We publish a CPU power figure for every board: the lower of what its power stages can carry, from the phase count, the class of stage fitted and the heatsink over them, and what its CPU power connectors can pass. Next to it sits how that compares to the most demanding processor the board’s own socket takes, because the same wattage means different things on AM5 and LGA1700. It is a rating of what the board is built to deliver rather than a bench measurement, so read it as headroom. Importance: medium to high for high-end CPUs, low for mainstream. A 65–105 W chip is happy on almost any board; a 170 W Ryzen 9 or 250 W Core Ultra 9 wants a stronger mid-range or high-end VRM. Advice: set the “CPU power” filter to Sufficient or better and don’t overspend. Once a board comfortably covers your chip, a beefier VRM adds nothing to gaming.

Form factor

The board’s size: ATX (full size, most slots), Micro-ATX(smaller, cheaper, still a full GPU slot), Mini-ITX (tiny, for small builds, fewer slots and only two RAM slots) and oversized E-ATX. Importance: high.It must fit your case. Advice: match the form factor to your case first; Micro-ATX is the value sweet spot, Mini-ITX only if you specifically want a small build (and it usually costs more).

Memory: type, speed, slots & capacity

Current AM5 and LGA1851 boards are DDR5 only. RAM speed (e.g. DDR5-6000) is the rated maximum via an EXPO/XMP profile; slots are two or four; and capacity runs up to 128–256 GB. Importance: medium. On AMD, DDR5-6000 is the gaming sweet spot; four slots let you add memory later, while two-slot (mostly Mini-ITX) boards often reach higher stable speeds. Advice: 2×16 GB DDR5-6000 in a four-slot board suits almost every gaming PC. Only chase 8000+ speeds on high-end Intel, and avoid filling all four slots with fast kits, because it lowers stable clocks.

Storage: M.2 slots & SATA

M.2 slots hold NVMe SSDs; each has a PCIe generation (3/4/5) and lane count (usually ×4), and a heatsink keeps fast drives cool. SATA ports connect older 2.5″/3.5″ drives. Importance: medium. Slot count matters if you run several drives; PCIe 5.0 M.2 is largely wasted on gaming (Gen4 is already faster than games can use). Advice: two M.2 slots cover most builds. Prioritise a heatsinked primary slot and don’t pay extra for Gen5 storage unless you have a specific workload.

PCIe slots

PCIe slots take your graphics card and add-in cards. Each has a physical size (×16, ×4, ×1), a generation (4/5) and an electrical lane count. Note a ×16-size slot may only be wired for ×4. The top Gen4/5 ×16 slot is your GPU slot. Importance: low beyond the first slot. A single Gen4 ×16 slot doesn’t bottleneck any current GPU, so Gen5 ×16 and multiple full-length slots only matter for capture cards, 10G NICs or extra SSD adapters. Advice: don’t pay for PCIe 5.0 graphics or a second ×16 slot unless you have a specific card in mind, and check the second slot’s real lane count before planning.

USB ports & headers

Rear USB comes in speed tiers: USB 2.0, 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps, 20 Gbps and USB4/Thunderbolt (40 Gbps). The front-panel headers connect your case’s ports, including a USB-C header. Importance: medium. Enough ports and at least one fast USB-C port matter for external SSDs, docks and VR; USB 2.0 is fine for keyboard and mouse. Advice: make sure the board has a front USB-C header if your case has a USB-C port, and enough rear ports for your gear. USB4/Thunderbolt is a nice-to-have mainly for creators.

Networking: Ethernet & Wi-Fi

Onboard Ethernet ranges from 1 GbE to 2.5, 5 and 10 GbE (we list the controller and speed), and Wi-Fi runs 5 → 6 → 6E → 7, with some boards having none. Importance: medium. 2.5 GbE is the modern standard and plenty for gaming; 10 GbE only helps with a fast local network or NAS. Wi-Fi 6E/7 matters if you play wirelessly. Advice: 2.5 GbE plus Wi-Fi 6E covers almost everyone. Skip 10 GbE unless your network supports it, and save money with a non-Wi-Fi board if you’re always wired.

Onboard video (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C)

Display outputs on the rear I/O that work only when your CPU has integrated graphics (an iGPU). Importance: low for most gaming builds, high for iGPU-only builds. If you use a dedicated graphics card, you can ignore these entirely, though they’re useful for office/HTPC builds that skip the GPU, or as a backup for troubleshooting. Advice: only filter by HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C if you’ll actually run on the CPU’s graphics, then match the output and version to your monitor.

Audio

The onboard audio codec (e.g. Realtek ALC1220 or ALC4082), rear jacks and, on some boards, a dedicated DAC and optical S/PDIF out. Importance: low–medium. It’s fine for most people; a better codec/DAC helps only with good wired headphones or speakers, and many gamers use USB or headset audio anyway. Advice: don’t pay a premium for audio unless you have nice wired gear to drive.

Cooling, fan & RGB headers

Fan headers power your case and CPU fans, and 4-pin 12V RGB and 3-pin 5V ARGB headers drive lighting; the VRM heatsink cools the power stages. Importance: medium. Enough fan headers for your build matters, and 5V ARGB is the current standard for addressable lighting. Advice: count your fans and AIO pump and check there are enough headers (a fan hub helps), and match your lighting to the header type: 5V ARGB vs 12V RGB are not interchangeable.

BIOS Flashback, diagnostics & quality-of-life

BIOS Flashback updates the firmware with no CPU installed, invaluable when pairing a new CPU with an older board. Diagnostics (a POST-code display or debug LEDs) pinpoint no-boot problems. Importance: medium, especially on AM5. Advice: on AM5 in particular, prefer a board with BIOS Flashback so a BIOS update never leaves you stuck; debug LEDs or a POST-code readout are a genuinely useful bonus on mid-range boards and up.

Colour & aesthetics

The PCB and heatsink colours: black, white, silver and so on. Importance: cosmetic. It changes nothing about performance, but matters for a themed build (a white motherboard for a white PC). Advice: use the colour filter if you’re matching a look; otherwise ignore it and spend the budget elsewhere.

Put together, the winning approach is simple: filter to your socket, pick the cheapest chipset and form factor that fit, confirm the board’s CPU power covers your processor, and check off the few connectivity features you truly need, then put every saved dollar into your CPU and graphics card, where it actually buys frames.
