SATA SSDs
Every 2.5-inch and M.2 SATA drive we track, with prices from several retailers updated daily. These are the drives for upgrading an older desktop or laptop, and for adding space to a machine whose M.2 slots are already full. Sorted by value, with price per gigabyte and endurance sortable.

When a SATA SSD Is the Right Drive
SATA is capped at about 550 MB/s by the connection itself, so every drive here reads at roughly the same speed and an NVMe drive is several times faster on paper. That cap matters less than it sounds for everyday use, and there are three cases where SATA is simply the right answer: an older desktop or laptop with no M.2 slot, a machine whose M.2 slots are already full, and a large second drive where cost per gigabyte matters more than speed.
Against a hard drive the difference is enormous in both directions. A SATA SSD loads and boots many times faster; a hard drive gives you far more space for the money. If you are weighing those two, the hard drive list shows what a terabyte costs on each side today.
Two Shapes, One Connection
2.5-inch drives are the familiar flat rectangle, fitted with a SATA data cable and a SATA power lead. They fit any desktop and most laptops that still have a drive bay. M.2 SATA drives look exactly like an NVMe stick and slot into an M.2 socket, but they speak the older protocol and run at SATA speed.
That second shape is the one to be careful with, because an M.2 slot does not always accept it. Some slots are wired for NVMe only. Check your motherboard manual for the specific slot before buying an M.2 SATA drive, and note that on many boards, filling an M.2 slot disables one of the SATA ports.
How the Value Ranking Works
Since speed is fixed by the connection, the score ignores it and weighs what actually separates two SATA drives: whether the drive has its own DRAM cache, its capacity (drives under 1TB lose points, because a modern game takes 100GB or more), how much writing it is rated for per terabyte, and the warranty. Value weighs that score against the price per terabyte of other SATA drives the same size. At a typical price, value equals the score, and price counts for less than quality, so a poor drive at a low price cannot outrank a good drive at a normal one.
A spec we hold no figure for scores zero rather than being skipped, so a drive nobody documents cannot outrank a fully specified one. The bar beside each score shows how much we could verify, and a low score on a low bar means undocumented rather than bad.
Every SATA SSD Spec, Explained
Capacity
The main decision, and the one that cannot be changed later. Importance: highest. Larger versions of the same drive are usually cheaper per gigabyte and rated for more total writing, which is why every capacity is its own row here rather than a dropdown on one page.
Cache: DRAM or DRAM-less
Whether the drive carries its own memory chip for its address map. On SATA there is no middle option: a drive either has DRAM or has nothing, since the borrowing trick used by DRAM-less NVMe drives is an NVMe feature. Importance: high. DRAM-less SATA drives slow down noticeably when nearly full or under sustained writing, which is exactly what happens when you clone a system onto one.
NAND type: TLC and QLC
How many bits each cell holds. TLC stores three, QLC four. QLC is cheaper per gigabyte, slower once its fast buffer fills, and rated for less writing. Importance: high for a boot drive. For a drive that mostly stores files you read, QLC is a reasonable saving.
Endurance (TBW)
The terabytes the maker rates the drive to write over its life, and usually the cap on the warranty. Importance: moderate. Everyday desktop use writes far less than these ratings, so this is mostly a signal of how the maker grades its own components. We score it per terabyte so a larger drive does not win for being larger.
Warranty
Three or five years on nearly all consumer drives. Importance: a signal. Between two similar drives at the same price, the longer warranty is the maker putting more of its own money behind the product.
Put together: pick the capacity, prefer DRAM and TLC for anything you will boot from or write to heavily, check whether your M.2 slot accepts a SATA drive if you are buying that shape, then sort by price per gigabyte and take the highest-scoring drive in the size you need.
