B650 vs B850 Motherboards
Both take exactly the same AM5 processors, so neither is faster than the other with a given chip. B850 is the newer 600-to-800 series refresh, and the difference that actually shows up on the spec sheet is PCIe 5.0: across the B850 boards we track, nearly all offer a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot and every one has a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, while B650 boards offer neither on the graphics slot and only about half on M.2. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you will use it.
The verdict
If you are buying a current graphics card and one fast NVMe drive, B650 gives up very little and often costs less. Pay for B850 when you specifically want a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot or a guaranteed PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, and otherwise buy on price and features rather than on the chipset number.

Is B850 better than B650?
Better specified, not faster. Both run the same AM5 processors at the same speed. B850 boards more consistently carry PCIe 5.0 for the graphics slot and for M.2 storage, which matters only if you have hardware that uses it.
Do B650 and B850 take the same CPUs?
Yes. Both use the AM5 socket and take the same Ryzen processors, subject to a BIOS update on older boards for the newest chips.
Does PCIe 5.0 matter for gaming?
Barely today. Current graphics cards lose very little on a PCIe 4.0 slot, and PCIe 5.0 SSDs mostly show their advantage in benchmarks rather than in games. It is a future-proofing argument, not a frame-rate one.
Is B650 still worth buying?
Yes, if the price is right. It takes the same processors and the same memory, and for a single graphics card with a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive the practical difference is small.
