The E is the only difference worth explaining: X870E uses two chipset dies where X870 uses one, which buys more high-speed lanes and therefore more slots and ports that can run at full speed at the same time. Both take the same AM5 processors and, across every board we track, both give you a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot and PCIe 5.0 M.2 storage. Nothing about the E makes a processor faster.
The verdict
X870 is enough for a single graphics card and two or three NVMe drives, which covers most builds. X870E earns its premium when you want to populate several fast slots at once, for example a graphics card plus multiple PCIe 5.0 drives plus a high-speed add-in card, without them competing for lanes.
