• A PCIe Gen4 drive on four lanes. A Gen5 drive works too and runs at Gen4 speed.
• M.2, from 2230 up to 22110 in length. Nearly every drive here is the standard 2280.
• At least 5,500 MB/s sequential read is recommended.
• With a heatsink, no taller than 11.25 mm in total.

Every drive listed meets the first three by its maker’s own figures. Drives whose speed we do not hold are left out rather than guessed. Sony recommends a heatsink; a bare drive fits and a thin aftermarket heatsink can be added, since the slot has room for one.

Which capacity for a PS5?

PS5 games commonly take 50 to 150 GB each, so 2TB is the size most people end up wanting. Price per gigabyte is usually lowest at 2TB or 4TB. Speeds above Sony’s recommendation make little difference in practice, so the useful sort here is price per gigabyte, not read speed.
