The 80 PLUS grade measures how much wall power reaches your components instead of becoming heat. At half load, Gold certifies roughly 90 percent efficiency and Platinum roughly 92, so the gap between them is about two percentage points. On a gaming PC that is a few dollars of electricity a year, which means the grade is worth far more as a signal of how the unit is built than as a way to save money.
Gold is the sensible default and clears the bar for essentially any build. Platinum is worth paying for when the premium is small, or when you want the things that tend to travel with it: a longer warranty, a better platform, and less waste heat in a small case. Paying a large premium purely for the two points of efficiency will not pay itself back on a machine that games in the evenings.

How much money does a Platinum PSU save?
Take the difference in efficiency against your real average draw. A machine pulling 400 W for four hours a day saves roughly 9 W while it runs, which is around 13 kWh a year, or a couple of dollars at typical US rates. The payback period on a large premium is longer than the warranty.
Does a higher 80+ rating mean better quality?
Less than it is usually credited with. Reaching Platinum does require a modern topology and better silicon, so the grade tracks the platform, but 80 PLUS certifies efficiency and nothing else: not ripple, not voltage regulation, not which protections are fitted. Across the units we hold data for, Gold and Platinum carry the same typical warranty and the same platform designs, so at this end of the scale the badge tells you about efficiency and little more.
Does a Platinum PSU run quieter?
Often, yes. It wastes less energy as heat, so the fan has less work to do and can stay slower for longer. The measured noise grade for the specific unit tells you far more than the efficiency badge does.
